More on those 40-meter beacons

Jack Evans, WA1DLA, writes from Sunderland, VT: "In reference to your QRP column in WorldRadio, December 2004, about single letter beacons, while in the U.S. Army during the 1950s I was attached to a unit that used the letter 'R' for such a purpose.

"It was run on several frequencies for propagation. This was accomplished by rotating a disk with the proper notches cut on the edge of the disk and a motor drove the disk over a key tapping out a continuous series of the letter 'R.'

"When traffic was passed, the marker was discontinued. If propagation was poor on one frequency, there were others to choose from. Not something that would be seen today, but it worked!"
